Turning: straight ahead on the same road

Distinguish crossing a junction from leaving your current road by turning.

When you turn, let traffic continuing straight on the same road go first. This includes a pedestrian on the pavement alongside your carriageway. A zebra crossing is not required for this turning rule.

Example: you want to turn right into a side street. A cyclist alongside you continues straight on the cycle track along the same road. Wait before crossing their route. Your indicator announces your plan; it does not entitle you to cut across the cyclist.

Turning left, let oncoming straight-ahead traffic on the same road pass. If an oncoming driver turns right at the same junction, you must also let that driver go first.

The memory aid “short turn before long turn” helps when two oncoming drivers turn right and left. It is not a rule for every bend. The ordinary turning rules do not apply to tram drivers; also assess the junction controls when a tram is involved.
