Vehicle & emergencies
Check your car and know what to do when conditions change.
Check tyre pressure according to the manufacturer, tread, lights and fluids. Underinflated tyres increase consumption and affect handling. Secure loads and keep your view clear. A red oil-pressure warning may mean you need to stop safely and switch off the engine.
Use dipped headlights at night and in poor daytime visibility. Daytime running lights may not replace dipped headlights because rear lights may be off. Main beam must not dazzle anyone. Rear fog lights are only allowed in fog or snow with visibility below 50 metres; not in heavy rain.
Make room safely for an emergency vehicle using blue lights and a siren. If you break down on a motorway, find a safe place if possible, switch on hazard lights and move with passengers behind the barrier safely. Call 112 for immediate danger or a serious emergency. At a crash: protect yourself and the scene, and help where safe.
