Hazards & observation
A good driver spots risks early and keeps room to react.

Look far ahead, check mirrors and scan the sides. Children near parked cars, a ball in the road and a bus at a stop are clues that someone may cross unexpectedly. Reduce speed before the situation becomes dangerous.
For immediate danger, brake in a controlled manner, firmly if needed. For a potential risk, easing off the accelerator and increasing space is often the first step. The safe response depends on speed, distance and traffic behind you. Give vulnerable road users extra space and check the blind spot before turning.
Rain increases braking distance and can cause aquaplaning. If you aquaplane, ease off the accelerator, steer gently and avoid sudden braking. In fog, slow down and increase the gap. If tired, stop in a safe place to rest.
