Road position & manoeuvres

Keep right, choose your lane early and change only when safe.

A intends to change lanes; B is travelling in the other lane.

Drivers keep as far right as practicable. Overtaking is generally on the left; exceptions include certain congested-traffic situations. Check mirrors, blind spot, space and speed before changing lanes. Signalling does not give you priority.

Use the acceleration lane to match your speed and position to the traffic flow. When merging, let traffic on the main carriageway go first. If you miss an exit, continue to the next. Never turn around or reverse on a motorway. Use the hard shoulder only when permitted, such as in an emergency.

When moving off, reversing or leaving an exit, also let pedestrians go first. Make sure you can see; ask for help when reversing if necessary. In built-up areas, let a bus signalling to leave its stop go first.
