Priority & junctions

First look for directions, traffic lights and signs. Then apply the general priority rules.

A approaches from below; cyclist B approaches from the right. Arrows show travel directions.

At an uncontrolled junction, drivers give way to drivers from the right. A cyclist is a driver too. Pedestrians are not covered by this general right-hand rule. Drivers coming from an unpaved road give way to drivers on a paved road. Trams have special priority at uncontrolled junctions.

When turning, let traffic continuing straight on the same road go first, including pedestrians and cyclists. Turning left? Give way to oncoming drivers turning right. When moving off, reversing, merging, exiting or changing lanes, let all other traffic go first.

Shark-teeth markings mean you must give way to drivers on the intersecting road. At a stop sign, stop completely and give way. A roundabout’s shape alone does not determine priority: check signs and markings. Never block a junction.
