Breakdowns & collisions

Get yourself to safety first and report your location clearly.

If you can safely reach a parking area, service station or emergency refuge after a breakdown, do so. Otherwise warn traffic with hazard lights and stop as safely as possible. An open hard-shoulder running lane is a traffic lane, not a safe waiting place.

Exit on the right where possible and wait with all occupants well away from traffic, preferably behind the barrier. Call 112 for immediate danger or a breakdown on an open hard-shoulder running lane. Call roadside assistance from safety and provide road number, kilometre marker and direction.

At a collision, safety comes before photographs or forms. Call 112 for injuries or immediate danger and follow emergency-service instructions. Do not stand in a traffic lane to photograph damage.
