How to study effectively for your Dutch driving theory exam
Practice becomes more useful when you understand why an answer is correct. This study plan combines lessons, focused review and mock exams.

1. Understand the rule, then the situation
Start with one topic. Read the explanation and then explain the rule in your own words. For priority, ask yourself who is involved, which rules apply and what changes when someone turns. Recognising a picture is different from understanding a traffic situation.
2. Turn a mistake into a specific learning question
After a mistake, look beyond the correct answer. Find the detail you missed: a supplementary sign, a pedestrian on the same road or the difference between stopping and parking. Write one sentence: “I chose this, but I should have checked that first.” Revisit the lesson and practise a different situation involving the same rule.
3. Spread practice over several sessions
Choose manageable study sessions, such as a short lesson today and focused review tomorrow. Road signs become more useful when you explain what they mean in the situation shown rather than only recognising their shape. Mix familiar topics with areas you still find uncertain. A study plan does not have to be the same for everyone.
4. Practise a full mock exam in a quiet setting
A full mock exam helps you practise managing attention and time. Complete it without help and review the explanations afterwards. The regular CBR car theory exam gives you 30 minutes for 50 scored questions and 2 unscored test questions. You need at least 44 of the 50 scored questions correct. There are also 2 introductory practice questions beforehand. ViaTheoria mock exams use 50 scored practice questions; they are not copies of the official exam.
5. Look at understanding, not just your highest score
One good score does not show that you understand every topic. Review several results and check whether you can explain unfamiliar situations too. Include ADAS in your preparation: driver assistance systems support the driver, but you need to understand their operation and limits. Use a memory aid to recall a rule rather than replace the full explanation. No practice score guarantees a pass.
Your next step
Choose one topic you feel unsure about today, read the lesson and complete a short practice session. Explain why each answer is correct. Return to mistakes later and then test your broader knowledge with a mock exam. ViaTheoria is free and independent of the CBR.
